Abstract

January 2020 is the date to comply with California’s SB 327 and California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA). California’s SB 327 is a first-of-its kind regulation focused on the security features of IoT devices, such as the smart watches, smart appliances and other smart gadgets that are fast proliferating our daily lives. IoT devices have been utilized to launch cyberattacks, including the massive Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack in October 2016. Past cyber-attacks are a mirror to the future. SB 327 is the first regulation of its type; and all can be certain, it will not be the last. And, with CCPA, a business that owns, licenses, or maintains personal information about a California resident shall implement and maintain reasonable security procedures and practices appropriate to the nature of the information, to protect the personal information from unauthorized access, destruction, use, modification, or disclosure. Organizations must examine SB 327 and CCPA to ensure the readiness of your enterprise cybersecurity program. Further, the NIST CsF and HITRUST CSF prescriptive standards that organizations can leverage to improve their cyber readiness. In this fast-paced, fact-based cyber brief, we will:

1) Examine the impact of California’s CCPA on an enterprise cybersecurity program
2) Walk-thru key areas of cyber risk with IoT/biomed devices and compliance with California’s SB 327
3) Enhance cyber priorities by leveraging prescriptive standards such as the NIST CsF and HITRUST CsF
