New Voluntary Cybersecurity Guidelines Released for Healthcare Sector – Introducing HICP
April Sather, Founder & Principal Consultant
Fellow at the University of California Irvine’s Cybersecurity Policy and Research Institute
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has taken a bold step in applying the 80/20 rule to cybersecurity – and succeeded. On December 28, 2018, HHS released a set of voluntary guidelines for the healthcare sector. As one of the first publications to emerge from the Cybersecurity Act of 2015, the Section 405(d) Task Group has created a suite of free resources to help organizations of all sizes mitigate the Top 5 cyber threats. These guidelines are based on the NIST framework. What sets these new guidelines apart from others is the pragmatic approach, clear language and realistic tailoring of controls based on organization size and risk profile.
April’s experience includes senior roles in Governance & Strategy, Operations and Information Technology functions in healthcare and financial services firms. Prior to founding Illuminar Consulting, Inc., April was the Chief Information Security Officer and Director, Innovation, Architecture and Security Services at Pacific Blue Cross. Earlier roles include positions at First West Credit Union, Deloitte, Sun Microsystems and Computer Sciences Corporation. April views excellence in IT governance and cybersecurity as critical to reducing risks that accompany periods of rapid organizational change. Her accomplishments range from leading data governance and innovation functions, to Lean business transformation, to complex post-merger integrations of people, process and technology. April is also a Fellow at the University of California Irvine’s Cybersecurity Policy and Research Institute. April earned her MBA from the University of California, Irvine and a Bachelors of Information Technology from Bond University, Australia.
